Her mother encouraged her to take dancing, singing, as well as acting classes. In the West End production of The Lion King Young Nala was the role as Young Nala. In the following year she was chosen to play Game of Thrones as Missandei Daenerys Targaryen's interpreter. The actress told Jimmy Kimmel that she heard about her being chosen for the role while she was working as a shop attendant at an apparel store. In the year 2015, Emmanuel was promoted to an ongoing cast member on the show. Missandei was the only woman of color in the show's cast. Her death scene while she was locked up was not a hit for viewers. Emmanuel later said to The Guardian that the reaction to Missandei’s death was so strong due to her being the one. I believe that many people who felt excluded or marginalized were influenced by Missandei or felt represented in her. The people were devastated when she died, and it was so tragically. That's how they're going to do the only woman of colour
